This event has ended.

Yoshio Aoyama (1894-1996) lived in Yokosuka until the age of 8. Hoping to become a painter from a young age, he traveled to France in 1921 and was selected for the Salon d’Automne shortly thereafter. He met Matisse, an artist he admired for his use of color, in the South of France when receiving medical treatment there. Returning to Japan in 1935, 27 of his works were well received when presented in a special exhibition by Kokuga-kai Association. Following the war, he continued to produce impressive landscape paintings based on views throughout Cagnes-sur-Mer in the South of France, which he regarded as his second home. Aoyama finally passed away at the age of 102 in 1996. This exhibition looks back over seven decades of his paintings, which continue to wow viewers even 20 years after his death.
