In 1954, the avant-garde artist Taro Okamoto published a book called “Today’s Art: Who Will Make History?” The Okamoto Taro Memorial Award for Contemporary Art, commonly referred to as the “Taro Award,” was established shortly after Taro passed away in 1996. In continuing the dreams of the late Taro Okamoto, this award invites and challenges artists who seem poised to make art history. Renewed and renamed the “Taro Okamoto Award for Contemporary Art” in 2006, it is now in its 21st year and this time attracted 558 submissions with prizes given to 26 artists.
