Okinawa 1935: Looking Back

Newspark - The Japan Newspaper Museum
Finished
In 1935, a decade before the ravages of war, Okinawa was a place of bustling Naha markets, horse-drawn streetcars, and Itoman fishermen. Recently 277 negatives of photographs from Okinawa in 1935 were discovered at the Osaka Branch of the Asahi Shimbun newspaper, offering a valuable look at prewar Okinawa. With the assistance of AI technology and the memories of native Okinawans, around 100 of these images have been colorized and restored. They are displayed in a joint exhibition by Asahi Shimbun and the Okinawa Times.
