Hiroshi Kokubo
Hiroshi Kokubo (b. 1949) graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School and later studied at Paris’s École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, where he absorbed the traditions and essence of European art. Kokubo’s style is characterized by thick, precisely applied layers of paint and harmonized translucent color tones composed into semi-abstract motifs. The co-existence of humans and nature has long been a theme of his work, and in the past decade or so he has taken an anthropomorphic approach to portraying “the forest as the source of life,” expressing an affection and awe of nature. This exhibition introduces 34 of Kokubo’s paintings with a focus on works from recent years, offering an overview of how his practice continues to progress.
