A Gift to the Museum

Museum of Modern Art, Ibaraki
Finished
2018 marks the 30th year of The Museum of Modern Art, Ibaraki. A museum’s collection is one of its most valuable possession. Donated works have been an important part of the museum’s collection since 1947 when the museum opened as the Ibaraki Prefecture Museum of Art. The museum has since been supported by these numerous generous gifts. These donated works are not mere gifts but instead tell a story of the connection between artists and their families, individual collectors, galleries, and local companies. These gifts have brought a unique color to the museum’s collection and highlight the fact that a collection is a fascinating cycle of gathering work and exhibiting them and by doing so attracting more work. This exhibition showcases what kinds of exhibitions the museum has held, excavating the memories of past exhibits, while also shining a spotlight on the people involved. A recently donated work by Tsune Nakamura (a portrait of Motoji Ihara) will be on exhibit.
