Artists

Kanjiro Kawai
Kanjiro Kawai was a Kyoto-based ceramics artist active during the Taisho and Showa periods. An acquaintance of artists such as Shoji Hamada and Soetsu Yanagi, Kawai participated in the Mingei folk craft movement. In addition to works from the collection of Kawai Kanjiro’s House—a museum converted from Kawai’s Kyoto home—this show giving a full account of his career features wood carvings, books, furnishings and ceramic works from Yamaguchi University exhibited publicly in Japan for the first time. On special display is a Panapet R-8 transistor radio gifted to Kawai by Panasonic founder Konosuke Matsushita when he nominated Kawai for an Order of Culture award.
