Mika Kawano
Born in 1983 in Oita Prefecture, Mika Kawano is a graduate of Beppu University’s painting program. She is a recipient of several awards from the Shunyo Art Exhibition, along with 2007 and 2010 prizes from the Beppu Asia Biennale of Contemporary Art. Kawano currently actively exhibits her work in solo and group exhibitions. Her work is full of grotesque creatures that exhibit an uncanniness and eroticism and seem to be a part of a bigger story. Taking from Western mythology and the Bible, Kawano adds unique attributes to create a sort of Alice in Wonderland world. The rhythmical delicate lines have a movement of their own and evoke Cy Twombly in their poetry and musicality. The artist will sometimes add a mustache or pearls or even needles to create collages or incorporate motifs such as mucus or insect shells to stimulate the senses. This exhibition is centered around her major work from the past 10 years including her “Nocturnal Garden” series exhibited in January of 2017 and “Annunciation”, in addition to new work. Compared to her previous exhibition which featured work focusing on softer skin tones, this time will feature 10 pieces using vivid colors such as red and 2013 stay in Vienna inspired “Nacht III”. Mika Kawano’s work will be simultaneously exhibited at 77gallery in Ginza, Galerie Vivant, and Arai Gallery.
