Tenshin Okakura, having resigned from the headship of the Tokyo Fine Arts School (now Tokyo University of the Arts), founded the Japan Art Institute in 1898. For its 120th anniversary, Yamatane Museum of Art showcases Institute artists who took up the challenge of pioneering new aspects of nihonga painting while learning from the classics. The show focuses on Taikan Yokoyama and Shunso Hishida, who were among the founding members of the Institute, and Kokei Kobayashi and Gyoshu Hayami, leaders of the next generation. Around 50 works including Inten paintings are exhibited, among them all eight works from Kokei Kobayashi’s masterpiece “Scenes from the Legend of Kiyohime” (Yamatane Museum of Art Collection).
