Joan Jonas
“Simple Things” presents the work of the American artist Joan Jonas (b. 1936), a pioneer of performance art and new media awarded the 34th Kyoto Prize in 2018. For sixty years Jonas has been pursuing new possibilities in performance art. A trip to Japan in the 1970s prompted her to purchase a portable video camera, beginning her practice of combining new media and physical expression. This exhibition shows two videos, “Stream or River, Flight or Pattern (Journey)” from 2017 and “Beautiful Dog” (2014), plus footage of her performance “Reanimation Performance (Milan 2014).” These works are among some of her most important and convey her life-long interests as an artist.
