Living National Treasure Zenzo Fukushima is a 16th generation practitioner of Koishiwara-yaki, a form of ceramics from Koishiwara, Fukuoka Prefecture, where Fukushima continues to work. The pottery scholar Bernard Leach once described Koishiwara ware as “the zenith of functional beauty.” Versatile in the materials of its glazes, which range from stone to ash to metal, Koishiwara ware is admired for its originality and elegant ceramic expressions. See more than 100 examples of this beautiful, functional art form practiced for more than 300 years by a master of the craft.
