Tatsuo Ikeda
Born in Imari, Saga in 1928, Tatsuo Ikeda was training to be a kamikaze pilot when the war ended. Ikeda attended a teacher’s college during the American occupation but was expelled after being labeled a supporter of militarism. These experiences of having his life at the mercy of the state became the foundation of his future artistic expression. In 1948, Ikeda moved to Tokyo to become an artist and joined Taro Okamoto and Kiyoteru Hanada’s Avant Garde Geijutsu group. From there Ikeda would commingle with a wide variety of artists and critics from genres and mediums including literature, theater, the visual arts, etc. in Japan’s post-war art scene, as he continued to produce his own work. Even as he approaches 90, Ikeda continues to express the changes in Japanese society and art scene from the post-war period until now. This will be the first exhibition of Ikeda’s work at the Nerima Art Museum in 20 years. The exhibit will showcase Ikeda’s influence on Japan’s post-war art scene from the 1950s until now.
