Modern Girl, Modern Boy - Modernity in Japan, 1920-40

Tobacco & Salt Museum
Finished
Japan underwent rapid industrialization from the Taisho period through the early Showa period and the Second World War. Industrialization also brought drastic drastic change to Japanese society, introducing so-called salarymen and office ladies to the workplace. The age of mass consumption arrived and many companies introduced products and advertising with a modern design flair. At the same time, the beginning of the show period also saw the Great Depression, events in China, and eventually the Pacific war. This exhibition showcases the lifestyle and culture as seen in the TV dramas and movies of the time through various documents.
