2018 Frankenstein – Art, Science, and Society as Seen in Bioart

Gyre Gallery
Finished

Artists

Robert Smithson, BCL, Aki Inomata et al.
With 2018 marking the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, this exhibition reconsiders issues raised by the novel in a contemporary light, as seen through the recent bioart movement, which works with biotechnology and living things in its creations. Featured artists include Germany’s Diemut Strebe, who has used DNA technology to recreate Van Gogh’s left ear, America’s Heather Dewey–Hagborg, who recreates individual faces with DNA obtained from garbage on the street, and England’s Tina Gorjanc, who has used stem cell technology to create leather jackets with Steve McQueen’s skin. These artists reinterpret the Frankenstein themes of bringing back the dead, the anthropocene, and the politics of life.
