Kazue Yamagishi
Kazue Yamagishi (b. 1891) relocated from Nagano prefecture to Tokyo at the age of 15 to apprentice as a wood engraver, later taking over on behalf of his teacher to provide illustrations for Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper. After going independent he traveled to Europe and the United States in 1926 to research printing on behalf of the Ministry of Education, learning the different techniques they used, which fed into his work “100 Views of the World.” During the war, Yamagishi traveled to war zones in Asia with the navy, recording the scenes he observed.
Focusing on prints held in the Fujisawa City Art Space collection, the first installment of this two-part exhibition will present his “100 Views of the World” series and “Landscapes in Japan.” Following this, part two will introduce “100 View of Japan,” featuring various famous spots from throughout the country.
