“Manierisums” is an art style found in the late Italian Renaissance. Giorgio Vasari added to the Italian “maniera” (method, style) the meaning “advanced artistic method surpassing nature.” However, it was later negatively interpreted as “just a Michelangelo imitator”.
The exhibition “巧術 Koh-Jutsu” (skillful technique) advocates methods of contemporary Japanese art. “Heutiger Manierisumus” uses the word “manierism” in its original meaning of “successors to advanced artistic methods.” Here Giorgio Vasari’s “style” presupposing universal beauty becomes a spin-off concept of Koh-Jutsu through the curation of Ikeuchi.
