Dion Soethoudt presents a project documenting improvised problem-solving during the daily commutes of salary(wo)men in Tokyo. With almost any form of mending in the subway stations, the applied design solution is solved with the use of “tape” as the main tool. These colorful, diverse “tapes” showcase a wide range of improvised design implementations and functionality, from practical and logical to nonsensical and clumsy. Initially, the “taping” gives the impression of a temporary, quick solution, but in practice often results in a long-term utilization with no clear solution, at least until the undeniable need of replacement (with another piece of tape).

The use of “taping” is of relevancy and importance for the artist because of the fact that subways are one of the main places to witness the seriousness of the “Karoshi” (death by overwork) problem in Tokyo. Subways and stations are one of the most common places where salary(wo)men, who spend an average of 20 days annually traveling through them, get extra sleep or commit suicide. Soethoudt will showcase a reenactment of the same materials, methodologies, and reasoning the government uses to fix things in the subways of Tokyo.
