Intoxicated by the Charm of Wine Vessels

Seikado Bunko Art Museum
Finished
Alcohol has been called the “nectar of the gods” and “the best medicine”. It has played an important role in daily life from celebrations to farewells. In the East, alcohol has long been considered sacred and offered to deities as a way of connecting humans to the gods. The vessels in which alcohol is consumed or offered have played an important role. As alcohol become commonplace, these vessels evolved and were created in various styles according to the seasons or to taste. This exhibition looks at the serving and drinking of alcohol through the historical lens of these vessels in China, Korea, and Japan from ancient China to the more recent Edo and Meiji periods.
