During the same period that Claude Monet was active, artists such as Charles Wirgman visited Japan and depicted the country’s landscapes and scenes from a Western point of view. At the same time, Japanese artists such as Yuichi Takahashi and Yoshimatsu Goseda learned Western painting techniques from Wirgman and created their own accurate depictions of native subject matter. This exhibit will showcase a selection of Japanese art reflecting the country’s energetic push towards modernization.
