The Gendai Hanga Center in operation from 1974 to 1985 produced works that brought out the special qualities of the printmaking medium and cultivated a practice of collecting prints. More than 80 artists including sculptors, artisans, filmmakers, and architects as well as 2D artists created over 700 works at the Gendai Hanga Center, which also printed art criticism in the Gendai Hanga Center News and exhibition catalogues exerting important influences on the art world. Through documentation and examples of the center’s works, this exhibition looks back how the center brought the potential of printmaking to its zenith.
