This exhibition is a part of the Earthquake Poster Support Project. This project was started by Professor Takashi Akiyama of Tama Art University in 2004 after the Chuetsu Earthquake, with the aim of using posters to make sure these disasters are never forgotten. The main activities of the project are for students and teaching staff to create earthquake disaster-themed illustrations and posters, hold exhibitions, and gather these works into a book that becomes a vital reminder of the disasters. Earthquakes are natural disasters but inattention and negligence can exacerbate disasters. This exhibition focuses on the man-made disaster that results from the fading away of these memories. The aim is to use a graphic arts approach, learning from the past and preventing the fading of memory and information, to prepare for future disasters. The appeal of these earthquake disaster-themed illustrations and posters is that they bring to the surface the true nature of the issues faced.
