Akiko Isobe
Isobe’s creative endeavors date back to her time as a student at the Department of Imaging Arts and Sciences, College of Art and Design, Musashino Art University, and she has since been active in a wide range of areas including fashion, magazines, advertisements, and even music videos. Regardless of the fact that the somewhat twisted, novel kind of style she has developed mainly around studio work and constructed photographs has little to do with the mainstream of contemporary commercial photography that is mostly based on pretended natural styles, Isobe has garnered a great amount of support. The installation of large-format prints she exhibited at the Jimei x Arles International Photo Festival “Tokyo Woman New Real New Fiction” in China in 2016 further underpinned her growing reputation as a contemporary photographer.
For this exhibition, she made prints of pinup photos of popular female show and TV stars originally shot for the cover of the monthly magazine Cyzo, and arranged them as a new work. In addition to posing models, the work includes photographs of parts or fragments of their bodies framed to look like mere objects, suggesting how the artist deals with existing commercial values, while aiming to establish a new, gender-transcending image of the human body.
