“Untitled (Surround)” is Motoyuki Daifu’s second solo exhibition with the gallery. Here Daifu focuses on the suburban Yokohama neighborhood of his family home, an area situated geographically between the suburbia captured by photographer Takashi Homma and the city shot by Takuma Nakahira. Unified in tone, the images are as casually composed as in his earlier domestic interiors and still lifes, yet the strangeness of this work is less a product of unexpected juxtaposition, information overload, or saturated color; rather, it is primarily a result of the off-balance nature of standardized suburban Japanese architecture. Installed vertically, with no regard to representation but with a focus on the photographic object, “Untitled (Surround)” marks a development in Daifu’s attempt to realize a contemporary Japanese photography. Daifu will release a handmade, limited edition box set comprised of the 16 zines featuring images from “Untitled (Surround). This edition of 15 includes a signed photographic print.
