Satoshi Uchiyama
Satoshi Uchiyama has been considering the question of “What is Painting?” for the past 15 years. At the same time, he has suggested that it is possible to create artwork that does not require advanced techniques, that repeats simple tasks, and can be realized through accumulations of time and labor.
For the series “It’s Growing Up” (2009–2015), he randomly chose ten different colors of paper tape and wrapped them all together; In “Injected Painting” (2014–2017), for which injected paint into the bubbles of air cell mat, repetitive acts of simple labor become art, which Uchiyama presents as paintings. His new series “stripe(s)” applies the same concepts. Uchiyama has cut the threads of various colors into the length his own wingspan, displaying the numerous threads simply hanging and drooping as an artwork.
