Folding Screens of “Famous Views of Edo” and the Lures of the Colorful City

Idemitsu Museum of Arts
Finished
The city of Edo (now Tokyo) developed rapidly with the founding of the Tokugawa shogunate. One of the paintings that captured the prosperity of Edo, “Famous Views of Edo,” reveals the appearance of the city prior to the Fire of Meireki 3 (1657). In the painting, we can observe people at work, visiting the pleasure quarters, and other richly depicted scenes of everyday life. This exhibition features these colorful folding screens designated as an Important Cultural Property in 2015, plus other works taking Edo as their theme. Enjoy the liveliness of the people living in this new city.
