In commemoration of the 110th year since his birth the Okada Museum of Art will for the first display its entire collection of works by Japanese-style painter Isson Tanaka. At age 50 Tanaka moved to Amami and spent the next 20 years until his death on the island. He was the first Japanese-style painter to depict subtropical animals. On display will be rare pieces from Tanaka’s Amami years, including ‘White Flowers and Jade’, ‘Three Kinds of Tropical Fish’, and what is considered his masterpiece ‘The Shores of Adan’. Also on exhibit will be pieces by Jakuchu Ito and fellow Tokyo Art School graduate Kaii Higashiyama.
