Tatsuo Majima “Dance of the Day”

Tatsuo Majima gave a performance on December 16, 2012, the day of a House of Councilors election, in which he continued or stopped dancing depending on the number of times his followers tweeted that they had voted. He continued his impromptu two-minute dance every day from then through the next House of Councilors election on June 21, 2013, recording these performances and uploading them on YouTube with the title “Dance of the Day.”
The number of his performances reached 230, and this persistence became a way of questioning attitudes of “resignation” or “oblivion.” Majima has since done video performances every time national elections are held, from the day of the public announcement through election day. Through the project, what Majima focuses on is not any particular ideology. It is a gesture of silent resistance as an individual to an environment of preconceived ideas. It also suggests the artist’s attitude toward human beings as sometimes forgetting and giving up too easily. “Dance of the Day” gives us a wider perspective on bigger problems, such as relationships between the individual and society and the responsibility of an individual in a community while accepting the antinomy and ambiguity of people. This exhibition is comprised of Majima’s “Dance of the Day” videos and a series of self-portrait sculptures reproducing “Dance of the Day” in clay.
