Joseph Turner “Poetics of Landscape”

Sompo Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Joseph Turner
Exhibiting the work of Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851), one of Britain’s leading masters of landscape paintings. Turner employed skillful techniques to depict nature’s various expressions, such as peaceful countryside landscapes, stormy seas, and towering mountains. By uniquely evoking light and atmosphere, Turner’s landscape paintings influenced many artists including French Impressionist and Meiji-era Japanese painters, who responded with a boom in watercolor painting. This exhibition introduces some 120 of Turner’s watercolor, oil, and print works and focuses on their core and allure in four sections, entitled “Topography,” “Seascapes,” “Landscapes of Antiquity,” and “Mountains.”
