Chuji Nakamura
Born in 1898 in what is known today as Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, Chuji Nakamura moved to Tokyo at the age of 20. He spent his career as an artist moving from place to place but lived the last two decades of his life in the Nukui neighborhood of Tokyo’s Nerima Ward. Influenced by fellow artist Hiroshi Mizunami, Nakamura studied monotype, a printing technique in which etchings on glass or metal are transferred onto paper, and produced five volumes of self-published illustrated poetry, including “Mushitachi to Tomoni” (Among the Insects) and “Shutoshu” (Autumn Winter Collection). With 2018 marking the 120th anniversary of Nakamura’s birth, the museum presents his first exhibition in Nerima, introducing around 80 works including early oil paintings, watercolors, prints, and illustrated poems.
