Taisho Modern – Taisho Imagery and Tokyo Modern Design

The Hibiya Library Museum
Finished
In the Taisho and early Showa eras of the early 20th century, the emergence of mass media and revolutions in printing technologies produced popular printed materials known as “imagery,” which took the forms of books, magazines, pamphlets, postcards, and advertisements. Artists such as Takehisa Yumeji and Settai Komura created illustrations for novels, magazines, and other publications. This was also a time when cinema, music, cafes, and modern fashion flourished, resulting in the development of commercial design led by pioneers like Hisui Sugiura. Coinciding with the Tokyo Station Gallery show “Takehisa Yumeji: Master of Japanese Modern Illustration,” this exhibition introduces magazines, books, pamphlets, packages, and more showcasing evergreen graphic design from the Taisho and early Showa eras.
