Okoku Konoshima
This two-part exhibition introduces the work of Okoku Konoshima, a Nihonga painter active in Kyoto from the Meiji era (1868-1912) through the Showa (1926-1989) period. Having studied under Keinen Imao in the Shijo School tradition, Konoshima’s talent blossomed in his twenties. This first installment focuses on his prized studies of animals. With works ranging from masterpieces like “Winter Moon,” depicting a fox walking through a snowy bamboo forest, to works never exhibited before, this show traces the evolution of Konoshima’s diverse artistic expression.
