Joyce Pensato
Born in Brooklyn, New York where she continues to be based, Joyce Pensanto studied at the New York Studio School, and has since developed her career as an international artist with a focus on the medium of painting. She has exhibited extensively including recent exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, St.Louis (2017); Kunstraum Innsbruck, Austria (2016); Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Fort Worth, TX (2015); while her works also included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; The Dallas Museum of Art; the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; and the FRAC des Pays de la Loire, France. Pensato is also the recipient of numerous awards including The Robert de Niro, Sr. Prize(2013); The Award of Merit Medal for Painting from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (2012); and the Anonymous Was A Woman Award (2010). Pensanto is known for her large-scale paintings that employ a cast of familiar American cartoon characters such as Homer Simpson, Batman, Donald Duck, and Mickey Mouse, as well as the comedian Groucho Marx, and a character the artist herself refers to as “The Juicer.” Such characters that are uncannily transformed through her fast, dynamic, and gestural hand could be regarded as abstracted expressions of Pop Art, conceived through an approach reminiscent of action painting. The traces of erasure in her drawing works have also been considered in relation to Robert Rauschenberg’s work “Erased de Kooning Drawing” (1953). Pensanto’s works that have been depicted through various techniques and approaches, adds depth and sheds light upon the darkness lurking within our familiar Pop Iconography, and further seems to raise questions regarding our perception of and engagement with popular American culture. The exhibition will be Pensanto’s first solo exhibition in Japan since the previous showing of her works in the 2017 group exhibition “Petzel at Nanzuka,” and features five paintings on canvas rendered in enamel paint, and a variety of large and small drawings in charcoal and pastels.
