Yui Horiuchi
Using ink and watercolor, Yui Horiuchi depicts lush natural landscapes that foreground female figures embodying diverse ways of life. This exhibition, “We Must Bring Salvation Back,” features new works depicting not only women, but the relationships extending into the spaces they inhabit. The title is drawn from a song she listened to while producing these works – the Jackson 5’s “I’ll Be There.” Horiuchi has said that, listening to songs from a bygone era on an old radio, the lyrics almost felt like messages from a different but familiar world. She was particularly drawn to the opening lines, “We must bring salvation back/Where there is love, I’ll be there,” in reflecting Horiuchi’s own practice in dealing with loss, recovery, and salvation.
