Hiratsuka Museum of Art

Artists

Mitsumasa Anno
Mitsumasa Anno, winner of the Hans Christian Andersen Award and other prestigious prizes, worked widely as an artist, children’s book author, and designer. He made his debut in 1968 with the picture book “Fushigina E” (Mysterious Pictures). Taking a bird’s-eye-view perspective, Anno’s works are highly detailed and reflect the mountain scenery and daily lives of people in his hometown of Tsuwano, Shimane Prefecture. Filled with nostalgia and warmth, his illustrations continue to win over many today still. He was also active in the fields of mathematics and literature, and he drew on his wealth of knowledge and imagination to fill his works with curiosities, puzzles, and startling discoveries. This exhibition features not only original illustrations from his picture books, but also his designs for books, posters, and other works, surveying his career from its early years through the present.
