Ricarda Roggan
Ricarda Roggan was born in Dresden, former East Germany in 1972. She studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig, completing her master’s degree in 2004. In 2003, Roggan entered the Royal College of Art in London. Currently one of the most important photographers in Germany, she portrays places and rooms that are no longer used, and traces left by the people once living there. For this exhibition—her first in four years—she will show nine pieces, primarily works from her “APPARATE” series in their Japan debut. “APPARATE,” German for “apparatus,” features images of projectors. The special aura of projectors—the weight of the heavy apparatus, the subdued clattering of the motors, the airy flickering of the images in the movie theater—has fascinated Roggan since her days as a student. When searching for projectors taken out of service in the digital age of movie projection, Ricarda Roggan encountered a passionate collector who had preserved an almost complete collection of 35mm, 16mm, and 8mm projectors in several sheds in the garden of his house in Leipzig. All of them were machines long ago taken out of circulation: a treasure just waiting to be retrieved someday by a museum. From the chaos of the collection, the photographer separated out projectors whose names caught her fancy. Ricarda Roggan paints with light and time. In their sober objectivity, the resulting distillations are reminiscent of industrial and advertising photographs from the 1960s and ’70s, the era from which the apparatus come. And yet, the pictures transcend mere commercial photographs and point us to an era in the future, far distant from the days when the projectors were manufactured.
