In painting, monochrome refers to a single color or a pale-colored work. Adding a background color brings in another hue, and gradations are included in most cases. In printing, photography, and film, monochrome is characterized by black and white. The French painter Yves Klein is famous for working in a single shade of ultramarine blue. Here five artists explore monochrome in pen drawings, watercolors, lithographs, woodblock prints, and copper etchings.
