William Morris
William Morris (1834–1896) was a British novelist, poet, designer, and inventor. Believing that only things that are “useful and beautiful” should be brought into the home, in theory and practice he aimed to merge life and art through the Arts and Crafts Movement, a pillar of 20th century design. His intricate and beautiful patterns marked by motifs from the natural world remain beloved to this day.

This exhibition is divided into three parts: Before William Morris, William Morris and Morris & Co., and The Arts and Crafts Movement. It traces the evolution of British wallpaper design and Morris’s role and legacy in it. There is also a corner dedicated to Japanese kintokaku leather paper, which was exhibited at the Vienna Expo of 1873 and found many fans in Europe.
