Playback PlayPark

Lifestyle Design Center
Finished
In the summer of 1979, “Playpark,” a play area for children, opened in the corner of Hanegi Park in Setagaya City. Hanegi Playpark is the first permanent adventure play area that was set up in Japan. Under the motto, “Play freely at your own risk,” children make a fire, build stalls, or play with water and dirt. How did such play areas for children come about and expand to other regions of Japan? This exhibition shines a spotlight on and “plays back” the period around 1979 when Hanegi Playpark was created. Through materials such as photos, videos, and signboards, the exhibition traces the history of the Playpark including its predecessors: the original “Adventure Playground Kodomo Tengoku”, which opened on a covered waterway in Kyodo, Setagaya City; and the subsequent “Sakuragaoka Adventure Playground” that moved and reopened in a new location. The movement to develop places where children can play freely in our neighborhoods, in turn, led to the building of communities through the creation of play areas. Today, children have fewer places and opportunities to play outdoors. Furthermore, childrearing is increasingly isolated in Japan. Against this backdrop, this exhibition examines “playing” and “local government” based on Hanegi Playpark in 1979.
