Soboku-e: Japanese Innocent Paintings Through the Ages

Mitsui Memorial Museum
Finished
Japanese art has long featured gentle touches and broad strokes. Compellingly simple or clumsy works with unusual styles captivate viewers. Featuring such “Soboku-e” (innocent paintings) with mildly “off” depictions, this exhibition introduces works from a variety of eras and styles, from the works of masters to examples offering new ways to appreciate art. In addition to paintings, Buddhist and Shinto sculptures displaying this “soboku” innocence are also featured, broadening the definition of this particular form of beauty.
