Toshiharu Fujii
Dai-ichi Life Gallery permanently exhibits a selection of works awarded The Vision of Contemporary Art (VOCA) prize. It also holds temporary exhibitions for VOCA winners throughout the year. This time it features 2018 VOCA Encouragement Award winner Toshiharu Fujii. In recent years, Fujii has been creating oil, watercolor, and acrylic paintings with motifs of tiaras, chandeliers, candles, flower vases, and diamonds reflecting light from shiny objects such as aluminum cans and mica stones. Thin layers of glossy color spread across the canvas create craft-like and decorative elements that nonetheless contain a complex depth. Incorporating various motifs and methods, these surfaces resembling thin films are the result of the artist’s desire to “unify dualistic images such as light and dark, rise and fall, life and death, suggesting that what appears will eventually disappear.” He also takes an interest in wavy surfaces such as curtains rather than flat surfaces such as walls. This interest can be seen in the title of “Drape” given to his solo exhibition. New paintings and drawings demonstrating the artist’s growth since receiving last year’s VOCA Award are on display.
