The Tokyo Photographic Art Museum will be holding a solo exhibition by one of today’s leading nature photographers, Tadashi Shimada, whose work is highly regarded throughout the world. Shimada (1949–) is world-famous for his photographs of wildlife, particularly those of kingfishers. From works that capture the powerful sense of presence and sublime vitality of kingfishers and ruddy kingfishers, to delicate photographs of other birds that live in Japan’s humid climate, his diverse works share the same consciousness and sensibilities that are a feature of the traditional Nihonga-style of painting that promotes ‘learning from nature’, and are highly regarded everywhere. This exhibition will feature an overview of his forty-year career while also introducing the his pictures of the rare wildlife in ‘the world’s oldest rainforest’ of New Guinea, which enthrall people with their mysterious and beautiful appearance.We hope that you will come and witness these ‘miraculous moments’ that are a result of the fusion of Shimada Tadashi’s outstanding aesthetics with the latest technology and which transcend human perception.
