Uma Kinoshita + Ryuichi Yahagi “Pairing Fukushima”

Emon Photo Gallery
Finished

Artists

Uma Kinoshita, Ryuichi Yahagi
Photographer Uma Kinoshita and artist Ryuichi Yahagi are based in different genres but both work on projects that focus on the lingering effects of the Great East Japan Earthquake and the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Incident. “Pairing Fukushima” will present their documentary photography and stone sculptures. Through this collaboration, thoughts towards the past, present, and future of Fukushima will cross over. Kinoshita visited Fukushima three years after the disaster and photographed landscapes using strict compositions and monochrome film. In this exhibition, 14 pairs of photographs and texts will be printed in gelatin silver on hand-screened paper, which has a history of over 1000 year in Fukushima Prefecture. Yahagi’s “Moseki,” or stone sculptures carved by hand to copy a stone originally made by nature, will be presented in the center of the gallery. The original stone came from Namie-cho and Tomioka-cho in Fukushima and the copy was carved with a stone found close to the only nuclear plant in Mexico.
