Culture and science have brought new insight, forms of expression, and technology to this country that has repeatedly experienced alternating cycles of “disaster” and “festivities”.

As a part of this ongoing cycle, this exhibition, titled ‘Engineering of Mourning’, reexamines Japanese contemporary art. Since the 1970s, Japanese society has become increasingly information-driven. Using this a starting point, the exhibition takes a look at how Japanese contemporary art has used concurrent culture and technology to virtually simulate the memories of the various disasters.
