The Utagawa School started by Toyoharu Utagawa is regarded as the largest faction in the Ukiyo-e world. Toyokuni followed Toyoharu, while Yoshitoshi followed Kuniyoshi under a different branch succeeded by Toshikata, Kiyokata, and Shinsui. This is the well-known lineage of Ukiyoe. But! There was in fact another line of Utagawa school. The talents of Toshihide, Eihou, and Tomoyo have sadly been forgotten, but each enjoyed great popularity during his respective Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras, and their branch also carried on the proud tradition of Utagawa Ukiyo-e into the realm of illustration. This exhibition unearths the forgotten history of these artists. It also publically presents a rare Nionga painting by Eihou Hirezaki for the first time on the occasion of the 140th anniversary of the artist’s birth.
