Masaharu Sato
Masaharu Sato has been struggling with a disease for nearly eight years. Although it has been difficult for him to make new video works due to his declining vision since last September, he remains passionate about creating acrylic painting on wooden panels. Filtered through his brushstrokes, familiar motifs reappear as individual mental representations. In this exhibition, nine of these new paintings will be shown.

Sato obtained an M.F.A. in painting at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1999. He later studied in Germany at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and lived there for 10 years, returning to Japan in 2010. He has shown work in numerous exhibitions in several capital cities. In 2009, he received a special prize at the 12th Taro Okamoto Award for Contemporary Art, and in 2011 he was selected for Jury Selection Prize in the 15th Japan Media Arts Festival. The solo exhibition “Hara Documents 10 Masaharu Sato: Tokyo Trace” at Hara Museum of Contemporary Art in 2016 attracted widespread attention.
Sato is best known for his video art that utilizes the rotoscope technique, in which he uses a pen-like tool to trace images taken by a video camera to animating them. This reanimated video footage presents “real and slightly bizarre moments” that interweave notions of reality and unreality.

“Dr. Reaper” will be held in parallel with two exhibitions showing Sato’s video art:
Mori Art Museum, Roppongi Crossing 2019: Connexions (February 9 ~ May 26, 2019)
Tokyo Arts and Space (TOKAS), ACT Vol. 1: First Lingering Mist of Spring (February 23 ~ March 24, 2019)
