Artists

Tomoko Mukaiyama
La Fondation d’entreprise is pleased to present the Amsterdam-based artist Tomoko Mukaiyama at Maison Hermès le Forum. In addition to being internationally active as a pianist, Mukaiyama has displayed talent in a wide range of other fields, directing and choreographing stage works and creating art installations. Mukaiyama endeavors to make productions with unconventional forms, such as concerts designed for a one-person audience and performances in which the viewers mount the stage. She has a longstanding interest in the spaces where music are performed and the people who are involved with them, and examines how performers and audiences comprehend music and perceive the space.

This exhibition, “Pianist,” centers on a series of piano performances that will be held from February 5 to 28, 2019. The start coincides with the first day of spring, a means of regulating nature and human life. The gallery will only be open for a few hours every day, displaying an installation made up of a forest of pianos, where Mukaiyama will stage her daily concert. In this environment (with a time difference that increases one hour a day), time will always be different and pass slowly. Neither a concert hall, a theater, nor a music studio, the art gallery will serve as the stage where the experience of the pianist intersects with the audience. Visitors will become part of the installation on a deliberately staggered, extraordinary turntable. Mukaiyama invites us to take part in the adventure as partners in an open-ended, limitless work overflowing with possibilities. After this 24-day period ends, gallery times will return to normal, yet our own sense of time is likely to remain somewhat altered as we listen closely to the silence.
