Parabola of Pre-Raphaelitism

Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum, Tokyo
Finished

Artists

J.M.W. Turner, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Everett Millais
Seeking the wholesale reform of British art, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood—formed in 1848 by Dante Gabriel Rossetti and his colleagues—had a tremendous impact. The works by these avant-garde artists appealed to the emotions and, consequently, evoked a huge response from audiences. People found great significance in their art at a time when the foundations of society were shifting. John Ruskin, the intellectual mentor to the group, being a champion of the need for art that speaks to everyone, was also the one who made the connection between the Pre-Raphaelites and—among others—Edward Burne-Jones, William Morris, and the great landscape painter J.M.W. Turner. This exhibition reveals the rich legacy of the period, tracing the achievements of the Pre-Raphaelites through approximately 150 works encompassing paintings in oil and watercolour, as well as drawings, stained glass, tapestries and furniture from the collections of individuals and organizations in Britain and North America.
