Artists

Yumeji Takehisa
Yumeji Takehisa (1884–1934) rose to prominence in the Taisho period with whimsically expressive portraits of beautiful women. His wide-ranging work spans genres such as Nihonga, oil painting, watercolors, and prints. He also created poetry and nursery rhymes, designed envelopes and postcards, and created book decorations and cover art for musical scores. As a result, his body of work has reached a great number of people and is loved for its sophisticated color schemes and novel compositions that still appear on book covers and merchandise today. Its appeal has not faded even in modern times.

This exhibition introducing the full picture of Takehisa’s work displays many rare hand-drawn portraits of “Yumeji-style Beauties,” as well as decorative designs for goods such as envelopes that were actually sold and decorations for books and scores. The show also spotlights the artist’s long-awaited dream of traveling to Europe and the U.S., which he fulfilled late in life. Works depicting foreign women he painted during these travels such as “Woman with a Fan” (1932–1933) are featured.
