Unseen Bruegel—A Miraculous Experience on Three Giant Screens

Commemorating the 450th Anniversary of the Death of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, this is the first video space in Japan to introduce the drama hidden in the motifs of three famous Bruegel works on three screens. The crowd composition favored by Bruegel is difficult to observe in detail with the naked eye. That’s because there are houses, farmers, and work huts everywhere on the screen, with various people working and quite a few livestock and animals coexising with humans. Also, in the picture of demons and monsters, birds, reptiles, and “weird creatures” that combine instruments and humans are also active. In the super-resolution (Gigapixel) image space with this huge screen, the personality and emotion of each of these carefully drawn crowds is introduced, the deep meaning of their belongings and tools, and the idea source of the monster is shown. For the viewer, it will be a chance to discover a new dimension of Bruegel that has never been seen.
This video released in March 2016 at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Belgium’s “Brugel Box” has been met with great renown. Dr. Michel Draghe, director of the museum, says, “With the help of technology, a new dialogue will be built between the visitors and the paintings, and the secrets so-far hidden may be discovered by many people.”
