The Sato Sakura museum is currently staging an exhibition centered on the theme of “Blue, Blue, Blue.” The exhibition explores the hues of blue prevalent in Japanese painting. For centuries, the creators of such paintings have used various resources to vividly represent “blue” in their paintings, imagining it as the color of the deep ocean, the sky with its floating clouds, or as a fragrant field of flowers.
Even by just expressing “blue,” the range of colors and painting materials used is rich, such as pigmented paint mainly composed of iron, or naturally pigmented paint made of blue minerals, or the juice of the true indigo. The exhibition further invites you to engage with painters’ experiments of colors by focusing on the “blue” that can be found in modern-era Japanese painting.
