Artists

Nerhol
Nerhol participated in the artist-in-residency Kashima in Beppu, Oita Prefecture in the summer of 2018. During the residency, Nerhol researched nationally designed hot spring health resorts in Beppu dating back the early Meiji period. The art unit looked into the culture shaped by hot springs with important resources and other natural features, took oral histories from Beppu residents, and presented works at a total of 13 sites including Beppu parks, shops, and their residency hall. While containing elements of a travel exhibit for the original show, this exhibition also features works not presented in Beppu, as well as new pieces continuing with their Beppu-based research.

Since their 2016 exhibition Strange Attractor at Yutaka Kikutake Gallery, Nerhol has focused on the diversity of natural environments, plant and animal life, and artificial production processes, attempting to reinterpret these themes through their works while questioning their given definitions. They offer hints for how we might live in this ever-evolving world.
